Department of Psychiatry, Assam Medical College has a glorious history. Initially it was attached with the Department of Medicine as allied science of Medicine till 1974. Dr Indreswar Dutta was the founder professor of the department and Dr. Pranit Kumar Choudhury was the first Registrar to join in 1976. During that period Department of Psychiatry undergone a lot of development under the leadership of Dr. Indreswar Dutta. On 3rd November 1982 Department of Psychiatry got the present premises. From 1986 to 89 Department of Psychiatry AMC was lead by another pioneer of Psychiatry Dr. P. N. Goswami. He was a very noble person, dynamic leader and very good physician. From 1991 Dr. Pranit Kumar Choudhury, who was the first Registrar of the department took the charge as HOD, under his leadership the Department got many development. In 1995 Drug De-addiction Centre was opened with the help of Government of India under National Drug De-addiction Programme. 

                              Department of Psychiatry AMC has been proving outpatient as well as in-patient services. It also has child guidance clinic, De-addiction clinic and Geriatric cum memory clinic. Community services are being provided in the form of outreach clinic, awareness programmes etc. This Department was also the Nodal centre for the implementation of the District Mental Health Programme in Tinsukia. Since the inception, Department of Psychiatry has conducted many state, national conferences, CME and Workshop. 

                                 The postgraduate course was started in the Department in 2004. Initially there were both MD and DPM course, from 20-21 academic years all the DPM seats have been converted to MD seats. At present there are eight (8) MD seats in the Department. Till now this Department has created more than eighty psychiatrists, most of them are now serving the people of Assam as well as India, few of them even working outside India.
